Nutrition does not need to begin with a spreadsheet. The balanced plate method gives you a practical structure that works at home, in restaurants, and when your routine changes.
Use proportions as a starting point
Fill roughly half the plate with colourful vegetables or fruit, one quarter with a protein source, and one quarter with a carbohydrate source. Add a thumb-sized portion of fats when they are not already part of the meal.
These are visual guides rather than rigid rules. A hard training day may call for more carbohydrate, while a larger person may need larger portions across the plate.
Make the plate satisfying
Flavour matters. Use herbs, spices, dressings, and sauces intentionally so a nutritious meal is also enjoyable. Satisfaction improves adherence and reduces the urge to keep searching for food after eating.
Check your hunger and energy for a week. Increase or reduce portions based on those signals and your progress, not on a single meal.
Put it into practice
- Include a clear protein source at each main meal.
- Use at least two colours of produce on the plate.
- Adjust carbohydrate portions around training demand.
Start with one change, track how it feels for two weeks, and adjust from evidence rather than perfection. Sustainable progress is built through repeatable choices.
